Bucharest -- January 7, 2012

Marking its three-year anniversary, the League of Romanian Students Abroad (LSRS) organized the third edition of the Gala of Romanian Students Abroad (LSRS Gala), an event dedicated to promoting young Romanians who study abroad and have exceptional academic achievements. The event was an important step toward the consolidation of the Romanian community of students and alumni worldwide.

Honorary Guests

Among the honorary guests of the event were: Mr. Traian Băsescu, President of Romania; Mr. Vasile Blaga, President of the Romanian Senate, and Mr. Teodor Baconschi, Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs. Other outstanding personalities from areas such as academia, politics, diplomacy, economy, media and civil society attended the Gala: Acad. Ionel Haiduc (President of the Romanian Academy); Mr. Cristian Diaconescu (Vice-President of the Romanian Senate); Mrs. Andreea Paul-Vass (Prime-Minister’s Adviser on Economical Issues); His Excellency, Ambassador Mihnea Constantinescu; Her Excellency, Huo Yuzhen, Ambassador of China to Romania; Mr. Florin Georgescu (Prime Deputy Governor of the Romanian National Bank); Mr. Ionuţ Dumitru (President of the Fiscal Council); Mr. Vasile Astărăstoaiei (President of the Romanian College of Physicians); Mr. Alexandru Lăzescu (President of Romanian National Television); Mr. Justin Capră (renowned inventor); and Mr. Marian Staș (CODECS Foundation).

The event brought together over 600 participants—Romanian students and graduates—LSRS members from over 30 countries. The Gala started with an artistic moment by Tudor Andrei, London Royal Academy graduate, and Dragoș Dumitriu, student at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna. They performed "Ballad for violin and orchestra op. 29," by Ciprian Porumbescu.

LSRS Gala and the “România Jună” (“Young Romania”) Program

The Gala was launched by Sebastian Burduja, President of the League of Romanian Students Abroad, who stated: “This event is dedicated to all young Romanians who distinguish themselves through academic and professional results in Romania and abroad. We honor not just a small group of individuals, but a model of excellence of the young generation and, above all, a source of hope and optimism for the Romania of tomorrow. In our vision, the Gala is, first and foremost, an invitation to start a conversation about the human capital of our country and about the young generation’s role in the long-term development of Romania.”

In his speech, Sebastian Burduja announced the launch of the „România Jună 2030. România în 3Decenii” („Young Romania 2030. Romania in 3Decades”) program. This work synthesizes the conclusion of the Young Romania Forum (Forumul România Jună), organized between 12-14th of August, 2011,  with the support of the Romanian National Bank. The volume presents, in premiere, a vision of the young generation for the development of Romania until 2030, and it is meant to be an open platform of ideas that can be improved upon and implemented by Romanian decision-makers.

Next was the speech of Dan Nechita, Secretary-General of LSRS, who talked about “Centrul pentru Acces la Expertiza Studenţilor şi Absolvenţilor Români (CÆSAR)” – the Center for Accessing the Expertise of Students and Alumni from Romania. This initiative was announced at the 2011 LSRS Gala and launched at the conclusion of the Young Romania Forum.

Cosmina Dorobanţu, PhD candidate at Oxford University, and participant at Young Romania Forum, said in her speech: „We know that the volume published by us is just a small step. But it is important as an attempt made by us, the young generation, to start a dialogue about the country’s priorities, the obstacles that it deals with, and the measures that should be taken.”

Honorary Guests Speeches

Mr. Vasile Blaga, President of the Romanian Senate, declared in his speech: “You, the League of the Romanian Students Abroad, have achieved an extraordinary feat that politicians can not achieve. You have succeeded in appreciating a quality that, unfortunately, is very hard to find in Romania of the last years: solidarity—and I congratulate you for this.”

Mr. Traian Basescu, President of Romania, spoke at length about the national priorities of 2012, from administrative reorganization to the healthcare system reform and modification of the Constitution. His Excellency addressed a special invitation to young people: “If in the following days there are three graduates that accept the salary of a State Secretary (…), I am ready to hire them on the basis of a graduate diploma.” At the end of his message, the President wished the Romanian students success in the pursuit of their objectives throughout 2012.

The Laureates

The speeches were followed by the award ceremony for the Romanian students with the best academic and extra-curricular achievements for the 2010-2011 academic year.
